About the Coalfields Regeneration Trust

The Coalfields Regeneration Trust is a community wealth building charity operating in Britain’s coalfield areas. We create jobs and economic growth by building industrial units for SMEs and using our taxable profits to generate social value through working with partners to enable our communities to reach their full potential.

Areas We Cover

The Coalfields Regeneration Trust delivers our charitable work in coalfield areas which were impacted by the pit closure programme of the 1980s and 1990s and also are in the 30% most deprived communities across Britain. Our charitable work is based around our five missions of Community, Health, Skills, Jobs and Climate.

Our CRT Property subsidiary works to deliver jobs and economic growth in all communities which have a historical link to the coal mining industry.

Our History

The Coalfields Regeneration Trust was established in 1999 by the UK Government to provide support to coalfield communities impacted by the pit closure programme of the 1980s/90s. During this period, the CRT were provided grants from UK, Scottish and Welsh Government funding to grassroots community organisations to support their work in the former coalfields.

In 2015, the Coalfields Regeneration Trust entered a new role by using it's CRT Property subsidiary to build industrial units for SMEs to pay for our charitable work in England and expand our offer into direct delivery of services to support coalfield communities. We continue to receive funding from the Scottish and Welsh Governments to enable us to deliver our work in Scotland and Wales.

What Sets us Apart?

The Coalfields Regeneration Trust is rooted in our communities.

We are proud of our coal mining heritage and determined to enable our communities to once again play a leading role by achieving their full potential.

We work in partnership to achieve the best possible results for coalfield communities, whether that is with our strategic partners at a national level such as the WEA and Macmillan Cancer Support or the key regional partners to support them to deliver change in their areas or the more than 900 community partners in grassroots organisations. We can only deliver change by working together.

Enabling the people living in coalfield communities to have the best possible opportunities is why we do what we do. We base our work around our five missions of Community, Health, Skills, Jobs and Climate allowing us to remove the barriers facing our communities so that they can have the future they deserve.
